Residents set up patrols to catch splasher

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents in Bangsar and Brickfields have set up foot patrols to look out for the motorcyclist who has now attacked 21 people by splashing acid and other chemicals at them.

Brickfields Rukun Tetangga (RT) chairman S.K.K. Naidu said several of their members had taken the initiative to patrol the area, especially after school.

"The residents are jittery since several incidents were reported in our area," Naidu said.


"Now everyone is cautious. We are always watching our backs, especially when a motorcyclist approaches."

He said the association would also hold a meeting with the district police soon on how they could contribute to keeping their area safe.

Brickfields RT secretary Ramli Sharif, 52, when met while on foot patrol with three others, said they decided to help the police by monitoring their own area.


"This is just a precautionary measure. We hope to scare off the assailant if he decides to strike here again.

"We are not trying to be heroes. We are just very concerned and hope this guy is apprehended soon."

His neighbour Marzuki Sulaiman, 45, said the initiative was focused not only on the splasher but also to deter other street crimes.


Bukit Bandaraya residents association vice-president Mumtaz Ali said they were considering re-establishing the RT association in their area.

"The residents, especially parents with school-going children, are very worried.

"We have also requested to City Hall for more streetlights near schools as there are extra-curricular activities at schools until late evening," Mumtaz said.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said police welcomed the efforts of the residents but cautioned them against taking the law into their hands.

"If they see anyone suspicious or fitting the description of the suspect, they must alert the police.

To date, police have said that the only description they have of the suspect was that he was dark-skinned and rode a Honda EX5 motorcycle with a carrier in front.
