KUALA LUMPUR: A 19-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being brutally stabbed while valiantly trying to fight off robbers armed with chains and a knife on Thursday.

Factory supervisor Toh Ai Ling had just finished lunch and was walking down a secluded lane off Jalan Klang Lama with a friend when two men armed with heavy chains and a knife approached the pair.

One of the men reached for Ai Ling's bag, which contained RM50, while the other began attacking her with a chain when she refused to hand it over.

Ai Ling tried in vain to fight off her attackers with her umbrella. Pulling out a knife, one of the men stabbed her four times in the back before grabbing the bag and fleeing the scene with his accomplice.

A passing motorist rushed the young woman to the University Malaya Medical Centre, where she remains in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Lying prone on her hospital bed, surrounded by tubes and machines that are keeping her alive, the victim was unable to speak to the New Straits Times.

"She is in a critical condition. She is still on a respirator," a spokesman for the hospital said.

Ai Ling's father, who wanted to be known simply as Toh, said yesterday the family was devastated by the brutal attack.

He said his eldest daughter was an active and vivacious young woman who had bravely fought back.

"She is a good daughter. I still can't believe this has happened to her."

Toh said the attack caused Ai Ling to lose her left kidney, which doctors removed on Thursday.

Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Abdul Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said investigations into the attack were ongoing.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident are urged to contact the nearest police station.
