SEREMBAN: Women who do not want their babies have been advised to leave them at Welfare Department offices.

State Family, Women Affairs and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Zainab Nasir said yesterday that they should not expose the babies to unnecessary risks.

Zainab said this when referring to a baby girl who was left on the bonnet of a car at the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital here on Tuesday.

The 2.3kg infant was found by an army officer at the hospital car park.

"There have been cases of babies who were left in a bus stop, rubbish bin and now this baby girl was left on a car bonnet. Fortunately, she was unable to move much, otherwise she could have rolled off the bonnet.

"We hope that this little girl's parents will come forward and claim their baby.

"She looks physically healthy and we are awaiting a full medical report which is expected soon," she said after visiting the baby at the hospital.

She said the three-day-old baby would be put in the care of the state Welfare Department for a month before being put up for adoption.

Zainab said baby hatches, available at KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Ipoh and OrphanCARE in Kampung Tunku, Petaling Jaya, Selangor, would help ensure babies were dropped off safely.

However, she also said that the setting up of baby hatches should be studied carefully as the main issue was to discourage parents from dumping their infants and curb baby-selling.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Saiful Azly Kamaruddin appealed to those with information to contact the Seremban police station at 06-6014999 or the nearest police station.
