KUALA LUMPUR: A nationwide programme that teaches schoolchildren how to defend themselves from criminals, was launched yesterday.

The "My Child Safety Programme" informs them how to prevent themselves from being abducted or to escape in the event of kidnapping.

Talks on safety by representatives from the Malaysian Red Crescent Society, police, Fire and Rescue Department and other enforcement bodies were also held.

The programme, a collaboration between AXA Affin Life Insurance Bhd and Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation, was launched at SK Sri Hartamas by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Rosmah, who is the prime minister's wife and Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) chairman, commended the organisers for their initiative.

AXA Affin's chief executive officer Loke Kah Meng said the two-year programme was part of their corporate social responsibility projects.

"We will conduct the programme at four schools in the Klang Valley this year and hope to reach out to 6,000 students."
